Everyone, I have an announcement!
Solar Wilds is now on YouTube. I’m really excited about this new addition, and wanted to talk a little bit more about my decision behind it.
I decided to launch a YouTube channel a little bit spontaneously. The idea had been bouncing around in my head for a while, but I didn’t actually think that I’d have the patience to shoot or edit long-form videos. Seeing another jeweler post about how much she loves YouTube really was the push that I needed to take the leap and just try it. In full transparency, I’ve committed to myself to try this for a year, and make at least one long-form video a month. After that, I’ll re-evaluate and see if it still feels right or if I want to go down another path.
However, I’m currently really excited about it because I ~love~ watching other maker’s YouTube videos personally. Mitera Made, Blacktail Studio, From Carly B, and Nicole Ringgold are a few channels that I like to watch as I wind down from the day. I find it fun and relaxing to watch for hobbies that I don’t even participate in (woodworking, sewing), and informative and useful for hobbies that I do.
I also think it’s a great way to learn more about the people behind the businesses that you support in a longer form way, instead of our quick 10-30 second typical reel content. I’m excited to share more about my studio, myself, and my process.
Also, to be completely honest - I just don’t love where a lot of social media channels are headed. It’s getting harder and harder to be seen without paying for views, and the owners of some companies are…sigh.
So far, I have a few long-form videos up. A little get to know me, a video about what tools I started metalsmithing with, and a product photography hike are the first three I’ve made. I’m sure I’ll narrow in over time, but right now I’m enjoying just really broadly showing more about myself and my business.
