Handmade Jewelry Care Tips

How to care for your jewelry

You should avoid getting your jewelry wet, if possible. It’s not going to break it - but it can just make it tarnish more quickly. Always avoid harsh chemicals, and take jewelry off while swimming, cleaning, hot-tubbing, or other activities that could damage them. I encourage you to wear your jewelry and take it on all of life’s adventures, but sometimes it’s best to leave it at home. For example, I always take my jewelry off when I’m cabbing (cutting stones that use rough polishing wheels), and would advise you to take off your jewelry when doing activities such as rock climbing where you could accidentally drag the jewelry across rough surfaces and scratch/damage the silver. It’s also best practice to remove your jewelry while applying lotions - just remove it until the lotion is dry and then you can put it right back where it belongs.

Tarnish

Over time, your jewelry will tarnish. This is normal, all metals will tarnish eventually. Brass tarnishes the most quickly, while sterling silver takes longer to tarnish. I include a polishing cloth in all of my orders which can be used to polish your pieces back to the original shine that you bought them with. When polishing, you should avoid any black areas that bring out the detailing (this is called patina) as this is intentionally added and the polishing cloth can remove it. You can also gently clean your jewelry with an old soft toothbrush and soap and water. Please be careful to avoid the stone while cleaning, as they can be soft.

Storing your jewelry

Silver is on the softer side - please be aware that if you store all your jewelry together it might get scratched. I’m guilty of doing this myself! But having a specific place for each piece and a travel bag for jewelry or different bags to keep it separate is best when possible.
